MT-DOR Monthly Payment Plan

If you can pay your total tax liability in 24 months or less, you may be able to get your payment plan online with Taxpayer Access Point or TAP.

  • If you need more than 24 months to pay, the State may require a financial statement.
  • If you can’t pay at least $50/month, the State will require a financial statement.
  • If you need more than 24 months to pay, expect the State to file a tax lien.
Contact the Department of Revenue directly if you need a payment plan of less than $50/month or terms longer than 24 months.

State of Montana Offer in Compromise

There is no tax settlement program available. Although years ago we heard that the State may have considered accepting less than the total tax due, not so much anymore.

Penalty Relief

Penalties may be abated if you accrued the tax due to written advice from MT-DOR.  But, penalty abatement due to reasonable cause or other circumstances out of the taxpayer’s control is not cited in DOR’s online procedures.  If it is, it’s pretty well hidden.
