What is the Taxpayer Advocate?

The National Taxpayer Advocate (NTA) is an organization within the IRS, independent of the Exams, Collections and Appeals that helps taxpayers solve case specific problems, and also recommends changes to IRS procedures to prevent problems. The NTA maintains local offices throughout the country, which can be found in Publication 1546.

How Can The Taxpayer Advocate Help Me?

If you are experiencing a hardship due to an IRS collection action, and you have been unsuccessful in your attempts to resolve the issue directly with the Service, contact your local National Taxpayer Advocate. If you are currently suffering a hardship due to IRS actions, the Taxpayer Advocate may be able to help you get relief. And if you are facing the threat of a hardship due to imminent IRS actions, the NTA may be able to help you avoid it. NTA helps individuals, businesses and tax exempt organizations. The NTA cannot, however, help you contest the validity of your tax liability.

How Do I Request Assistance From The Taxpayer Advocate?

To get help from the National Taxpayer Advocate, you must submit IRS form 911, Request for Taxpayer Advocate Service Assistance or request assistance via telephone. See Publication 1546 to find your local NTA office and contact information.
